Question: How can we expect humans to be more sociable and "happy" with more roles becoming automated, if they have less or no income... and what kind of effect will this have on general society? Most of the big companies moving to adopt AI for efficiency gains (i.e., fewer people, more money) are companies that actually provide services to other companies... do B2B companies actually have any relevance in a world where coding is so cheap that a company can essentially replicate the services from other companies? What happens, for example, when people no longer actually need Windows PC or Macs for work... what happens when people do not need Microsoft Office, or even Azure... because their roles are now automated to the extent where such software is not needed in the workplace. Obviously, a Microsoft-oriented example, but the same could be said for Pipedrive (and other CRMS) or Wix (and other CMSs) - where entire companies and industries exist to supply business-oriented tools that are actually becoming obsolete. AI can build a marketing site... AI can automate customer relationship pipelines and tracking... but if a business has no customers because people cannot afford to be customers...
We're not just talking about a workforce cull... whole industries and companies are at risk...
@Steven - how many of the businesses within your portfolio are safe from this industry cull? You mentioned those essential people in your business, in other businesses... but is the business itself actually still viable?
This is not targeted at you SB... but all these top billionaires that are chasing AI right now are all referencing that utopian notion that we'll all have more time to spend on what we enjoy... that's easy if you have enough money to live several lifetimes... what if you live pay to pay and our job is replaced/displaced... I for one would not be saying "ahh, it's ok, I'll have more time to spend with my kids"... no, I'll be saying Holy $*!t I can't feed my kids in a week. What happens when thousands, if not millions, of people enter unemployment welfare, and the government income sinks from lack of taxable income or purchases... I'm not going to be sat there thinking "ahh... this is the life".
Everyone is focusing on the loss of jobs and not looking at the wider picture... AI isn't just capable of automating business tasks... in a world governed by money, it can cause complete economic collapse. Empiricist views or no, the only people shielded from this are those who can actually live without a job.
Why does it seem that no one is actually truly talking about this big picture?
