I guess where I'm at is basically agreeing that if these guys are right, this is going to be a really big deal. What I remain unconvinced of is that this isn't just another case of a bunch of Silicon Valley people very enthusiastically telling everyone that _their_ super niche interest is the most important thing to ever exist. I think back to crypto, which lots of cryptography nerds have always had an out-there set of beliefs about how it's The Most Important Thing and that by extension it will make them the Main Characters of Reality - then it had its hype explosion, they all paraded around triumphantly like "see! this is the future!" and then it went nowhere and bitcoin ethereum etc is back to just being a weird speculative asset rather than "the money of the future." Unlike with crypto, I think AI really _does_ possess the potential to make a serious impact on the economy rather than just being a weird vehicle for speculation, but I can't help but wonder if this is just another bunch of nerds with a kind of out-there belief set regarding their niche obsession seizing the moment to declare that We Must All Listen to Them because _they_ are the Main Characters of Reality.
