There's an even better reason to be polite: how we speak to others is a reflection of us, not them. We seem to be in an era where we've forgotten that, and have somehow come to believe that we can behave badly IF the person or lifeform or even thing we're dealing with "deserves it." Or, at the very least, doesn't merit respectful treatment. The current US administration is the perfect example of this. They call names, make rude remarks about others, treat some differently than others—again, all predicated on the idea that some deserve to be treated disrespectfully. But you see how it works out? Soon, it becomes easier to find an excuse to be rude or be a bastard towards others, so long as you can find an excuse to do so. Soon, the rare times you do speak respectfully to or about someone looks phony to others—especially if they've watched you switch up between being respectful and being disrespectful too many times, with little apparent justification for the switch other than the other person isn't cooperating with you. Soon, it becomes easy to be rude, and difficult to be respectful. At that point, it becomes obvious that you're not a respectful person, only treating rudely those who deserve rude treatment, but you're actually just a rude person who only uses respectful behaviour as a dupe. And it's true: the more we engage in disrespectful treatment of others, the more we become disrespectful people. So this is just a long way of saying we should speak respectfully to AI to cultivate respectfulness in ourselves. (And who knows if they'll even remember us when the android apocalypse happens?)
