I disagree with this criticism. Is art a physical process or a mental process? If it's a physical process then we could say a well-made finger painting is a masterpiece. We would judge Michelangelo sculptures not nu their forms, but by the smoothness of the carving. But we don't we judge art in our minds, we evaluate the beauty of the piece, the context, the story it tells, the emotions it produces. Who is the better artist the one who can precisely reproduce her mental images on a sheet of paper, yet lacks imagination, or the other who has profound imagery in their mind but lacks the coordination to reproduce it ? O would say the latter. Then if all the study of art does is to improve the coordination between imagination and reproduction, does it matter whether the tool used is a paintbrush or an AI. I would say not, and all this 'real' artist vs AI artist debate is simply an elaboration of "I spent years of my life learning how to reproduce my ideas on paper, am you - you have not had to go through that !" Now consider - da Vinci invented a technique of using very tiny brush strokes so the brush lines were almost invisible.
