Many years ago I had all but the very last line of a song written and I was completely stuck. A friend of mine, quite out of hand, just threw out a line that perfectly finished the lyric. When I went to copyright it I thought he should have co-writing rights but he didn't want any. He thought his contribution didn't merit any rights to the song. I abided by his wishes but I always did give him credit when performing it. I was never sure what the legalities were (are) as far as that type of situation. How many words make a legal contribution? A few years ago I wrote a song that had a line that a lot of people objected to. The line (out of context) is "as I slipped up from behind" which some found creepy or nefarious, but back in the day that was an expression we used with perfect innocence. I had already copyrighted and recorded it but decided to see if I could rewrite the line. I couldn't think of anything so I asked an AI app for suggestions. I kept getting lame results so kept asking for new submissions, which became more and more cliched. After maybe ten tries I got this response..."I don't feel comfortable with this query any more. Goodbye." I swear I never new computers had feelings!
