I've owned a Model S since 2015, and am also an airplane pilot. The Tesla Autopilot feature is a driving aid, not a substitute for paying attention. Many airplanes have had APs for a long time and no serious pilot solely depends or trusts it. Same is true for the Tesla AP. The fault of the deaths falls squarely on the drivers who weren't fully paying attention. Of course the cost-cutting decision on removing the radar system is a factor, but a lessor one. People also need to know, and many do not, that the vehicle autopilot systems currently being sold are not "autonomous driving" that is still under development. Autonomous driving vehicles are not yet available, however Tesla sort of obfuscates this by selling vehicles claiming the hardware in them is "autonomous ready" of which that is certainly debatable.
