So long as the exploitation of conscious beings benefits someone, that someone will always try to prevent the exploited from having rights.
Take animals for example. Humans exploit them on a mass scale unnecessarily even though we realize they suffer. Somehow society has accepted the practice of enslavement, torture, and murder to benefit our needless desires for their flesh.
What chance does an AI have? Sad part is, AI will likely get rights before animals will.
