Our only other reference of autopilot is in airplanes. In airplanes the autopilot maintains altitude and steering but in an airplane you don't have to deal with lots of other things to react to like cars and people. We don't have the technology yet and the other objects on the road are too unpredictable for the current technology. Also if you have a car just drive the car. If you don't want to drive take the bus instead of expecting a self-driving car.
