The genie is out of the bottle now and it's already too late to roll back. So much of the global economy is tied up in AI's success that failure will almost certainly cause an unprecedented economic crash. Success will wipe out hundreds of millions of jobs... And then there's the existential threat which wipes out humanity. Merry new year y'all.
