From a personal standpoint, based on their record of the habitual abuse towards people of color, I don’t think law enforcement should have the tech at all. Period. Meanwhile, from a rational plane, if the application of facial recognition is being used as an aid to help form a conclusion to a case that is actively open, that seems feasible. Someone who resembles a suspect in an open investigation where facial recognition is used to help confirm a likely match and then that person is authenticated by human confirmation, that seems acceptable. The tech, in that case, is being used to aid in the confirmation of a suspect with specified margins for error, NOT being used as a defining or closing factor of the case, as there are such things as false positives and some people can starkly resemble someone else. Alternatively, using the tech in a public application where you are scanning several tens of people passing a public camera and identifying them in an attempt to, ”stop crime before it happens,” that's definitely a NO and I can't agree with from any angle.
