I can't help but shake the feeling that there is an unspoken rule about how musical art is respected more than visual art. There are systems in place on Instagram that, if you livestream with copyrighted music playing in the background, Instagram will detect it and shut down the livestream. On the other hand, it feels like only recently that copyright detection systems are being put into place for visual art -- it's only a recent implementation on DeviantArt, for example.
I work with AI and Machine Learning in my free time, and it is unnerving just how powerful these models can become. The problem is not so much that these models exist, and can produce interesting, pretty artwork -- it's what goes into their creation that's the problem. All of your work can be snatched up to train these systems, and, even worse, the system can be trained to essentially "copy" your work. For artists, the style of the artwork is just as important as the piece itself -- for Sam Does Arts, his work is not just "girl looking up at the sky", but it's "girl looking up at the sky in his DISTINCTIVE STYLE".
Our technology as a species is developing faster than our ethical understanding of how to use it. We are creating these powerful ML systems on one hand, while still not being able to grasp basic concepts of "hmm, maybe this is a morally gray area". What we need is more people going into the fields of AI and ML, with the express purpose of developing ethical boundaries and laws alongside them.
