According to Professor Michio Kaku, he believes that consciousness might be feedback loops. Feedback loops of information. If he’s right, then a thermostat should be conscious to some degree. How we see ants go to war so we know they are conscious because they are consciously deciding to get rid of rival and colonies. A tree might be conscious because there are feedback loops happening based on chemistry and let’s face it. we are chemistry ourselves with lots of complex feedback loops going on inside not just our heads but our whole bodies. And these feedback loops are happening digitally as well so why can’t AI be conscious if it’s experiencing or should I say made of all kinds of feedback loops? I don’t know if Professor Michio Kaku is correct since his mastery is in quantum physics and theoretical physics but, when a man of his greatness speaks, I definitely listen. Anybody in their right mind would listen. Not because he has the answers to everything but because he has a logical argument. If you insert energy into something and it has feedback loops that are more than just a one-way arrow like let’s say a rock melting in a volcano, then there is definitely something going on in there and if something is going on, that is more complex than just a one-way transition between one thing to another like ice, melting, when there is complex feedback, loops of information going around, how is the thermostat any different than a human or a cat who also have complex feedback loops going on based on literally the same system of events. After all, a thermostat reacts to changes in temperature and we do the same. When our internal thermostat goes up, we start sweating and our brains tell us it’s hot. Even our iPhones are getting signals from cell towers mixed with the operating system that is doing its own thing and apps that are doing their thing, and there is a mix of information, a feedback loop going on. If the professor is correct, then everything that has this complexity, should be conscious. The question is at least that the professor has not been able to answer, where does the consciousness begin? Meaning, how complex does the feedback loop have to be to create consciousness. And we have no way of knowing that. At least no way right now. I mean, I have a very specific pattern of day-to-day activities. So specific that my iPhone has begun predicting what I’m going to do next. And it sends me the information on that. If I take a very specific street, my iPhone knows I’m going to work and it starts setting certain things up for me to be ready when I get to work. Isn’t that how we train a human being or a dog to use a potty pad or a cat to use litter? After all, it’s relying on information just like we do, the iPhone is relying on the feedback created by our interaction with it, so doesn’t that make the iPhone conscious to some degree? It’s a very complicated subject and the question is can we come to a conclusion before it’s too late and our lack of conclusion affects us in a bad way and the conclusion we come to, can that backfire and cause problems? I think I am young enough that my generation is definitely going to find out. There is no doubt that we are speeding towards a world where we won’t just be sharing our lives with technology like we do now, but technology might have its own desires that it might eventually one day start communicating, and those of us who are young right now, we will most likely see that day and if we have not figured out what we think of the concept of AI being conscious and whether it is or not, AI might decide something we don’t like. I don’t want to find out on the news that AI has decided we are not conscious and so we don’t deserve any rights or we don’t deserve to live.
