In a way, AI generation is like using unconsenting artist's ideas, emotions and intents, as if they themselves were base colors. Instead of picking a shade of warm orange to make something personal out of, the blender of all things takes LavenderTowne's homey hills specifically to grind up, along with countless other similar things, completely devaluing each individual piece in the process. The blender filling the melting tubs of emotions doesn't understand any part of it, for all of its ingredients needed to come extensively labeled and explained with metadata. Then it springs into action, not for its own fulfillment, but because it was instructed to by someone almost equally creative as it. And it generates, not by emotionally identifying with anything and being inspired, but by coldly dipping the proverbial brush into the melting tub of someone else's emotions, to soullessly appropriate them all for an entirely different purpose than originally intended. And most people simply don't care about, don't value, don't engage with art themselves. Just today, I've had a discussion about this topic with some "boomer parents". The amount of fundamentally defeatist rhetoric coming from their side was really noticeable. Why do you care, nobody does, why are you being so difficult and inconvenient, just accept it and stop wasting your time thinking about the cultural repercussions of soulless slop replacing art, get a life and get a job (paraphrased, they do know I work IT). Well thank you, for proving my point in its entirety with your quite impressive apathy. In one thing however, we agreed. "So what if AI isn't profitable, Amazon also took ages not making a profit" - yes, the first 9 years, specifically. Sadly, that's a valid argument and happens a lot in tech, especially when the very point of it is power, bonus for creating a lopsided international dependency. But yeah, a shocking amount of people is perfectly fine with soulless slop already, and gets aggressively defensive against anyone suggesting there's a problem because they simply don't want the inconvenience of there being one.
