If OpenAI and its competitors had only followed open-source and legally sound ways of accessing content, they simply wouldn't be able to constantly impress us with their current skills. For example, when you ask the system to write a story in the style of Paul Auster and are totally blown away by the result, it's because the AI has "eaten" virtually everything Auster has ever written. Extrapolate this to any subject or image. This link between massive copyright violation and OpenAI’s core power meant Suchir's knowledge could have destroyed the company. We owe it to Suchir, and to his incredibly brave parents, to demand the truth.
