What is happening now with AI is truly game changing - along the lines of industrial revolution, invention of electricity or invention of semiconductors. But AI has potential to transform literally every single job family. Just provide a set of complex medical symptoms and see how Google's gemini can narrow down the causes. If this can happen to the medical profession other professions don't stand a chance against AI. Given this, companies simply don't know where things are going to go even in the next few years and consequently no one is willing to hire. Couple that with the over hiring that happened during COVID and our new grads are cooked now. Government policies can stem the tide a bit, but that also means ceding our technical superiority to China or someone else. AI is no different than the nuclear arms race, except this one will actually change or impact every single life on earth.
