The reason Tesla is going all in on cameras only is not only because of cost which is a major factor. Humans (What people compare self driving to) is only using two cameras. Keep in mind that the brain in a car can take in more focused data and process it faster then a human can in parallel. I can look at a person and tell they are running out in the middle of the road but i cant also do that and process that a car is about to rear end me at the same time.
