hmm, but we can be aware of something and still not know it is true. If you break down what a human brain actually is.. its a bunch of cells communicating with each other. neurons... sending signals. I understand his unwillingness to believe the synthetic can be conscious.. however, I dont think he makes a convincing argument for why it isn't.
Coming into this is the notion of free choice. In all likelihood we do not have free choice. We feel like we do because we are one with our bodies.. but we, are likely, in fact conscious observers experiencing this reality. Whether AI is aware or not isn't a deciding factor over whether it will take over the world of be dangerous ; it is purely the way it either is designed to work or the way it evolves to work that would matter in that respect.
So, we ... our consciousness doesn't reside within the physical matter of our bodies.. we are not that.. we are the convocation between elements of that physical matter.. we are a convocation and a context. My interpretation is that if the universe allows a complicated system such as a human to be aware.. then another complicated system should also possess some awareness too... of some kind. Maybe not be anything like human awareness.. but it should likely be aware.
