It strikes me as hilarious, the way so many people assume that we're very close to having machine consciousness. I've spent most of my life reading science fiction and working on computers--played my first computer game in August 1971. First encountered Eliza in the late 70s, and have more or less paid attention to this stuff ever since. I remember seeing people fooled by Eliza--which really made me laugh, considering how obviously not conscious it was. Nah, we're a long way from true artificial intelligence...it's just never been difficult to fool the majority of humans.
