My English students cannot comprehend that an AI generated paper is incredibly easy to spot. they usually try to change the structure of the sentence, or they edit word choice. The thing is, the resulting paper will end up looking like two different people wrote it. They do not have a discerning eye for writing yet, so they cannot tell the difference between a good paper and a robotically perfect one. When I read some of these kids’ papers, it’s as if I’m reading something from a 40+ year old professional writer. I tried to explain to them what plagiarism was (before chat GPT), and many of them did not know it was considered plagiarism to take someone else’s writing or ideas and put them into their own words. They just think that’s research. I assign a lot of handwritten assignments, so I know which kids can/cannot write. It’s so widely used that I cannot give zeros for it— 80% of my class would fail.
