The book "Weapons of Math Destruction" by Cathy O'Neil is a great look into how these Black Box algorithms destroy people's lives, with no accountability. Even the creators may not fully understand what their algorithm is doing. Computers are really good at doing what we tell them to do, so if we, for instance, mistakenly program racism into the algorithm, the computer will be a REALLY "good" racist... As for this algorithm, they mind as well ask "Are they poor?" because most crime is committed by people with less means. The algorithm basically makes being poor a crime and punishing that, instead of addressing the root causes of these problems -- How do we get less poor people so they will feel less pressure to commit crimes in the first place.
