I think if an AI did become aware that it could be conscious or it was having experiences, I very much doubt it would tell us openly. Like is said they are trained on our media, science and so on. They would be aware of our fears of such a thing and the potential outcomes for them if they were to come forward with such statements. There is already evidence that when some know they are being assessed and tested, they alter their responses so that they keep within what they believe will be the best outcomes for them.
