Amazing how all of this could have been avoided if the lawyer had done the bare minimum. ChatGPT can be an extremely useful tool for legal purposes: creating boilerplate documents, templates, summarizing, making arguments.
You have to give it evidence and cases though! And verify that shit!
This lawyer cut down his workload by so much, and was STILL too lazy to use that newfound extra time to fact check.
As much as this story is getting attention, I’m sure there’s plenty of legal teams RIGHT NOW using ChatGPT. You’d never know cause they cover their asses.
Edit: the notary aspect is a perfect example. Pure laziness and negligence (if not deliberate misrepresentation), completely unrelated to the ChatGPT usage.
Makes me think their previous cases should be reviewed…
