As much as I think that AI could potentially provide some fantastic tools for artistic work and that artists ultimately need to adapt to its existence, the march of technology is no excuse to toss out ethics. I hope the big AI companies can see a legal reckoning that forces them to ditch these dataset methods of generation and start over with systems built on more ethical acquisition of data.
It's encouraging that Deviantart was forced to backtrack and I'm hoping more can be done to fight this abuse. AI art has the potential to help artists and push art forward, but if ethics aren't properly established it could turn the art world into the NFT market.
