Oh I'm a disabled artist! I want to invite anyone who uses my situation as a justification for AI image generation "art" to fuck off. First, I am not less capable of making art because of my disabilities, I'm capable of learning and employing techniques just as much as any able-bodied artist. Second, most pertinently I think, any argument that weaponises disabled people RE AI image generation is rooted in capitalism and output prioritisation. The idea that art has to be produced quickly and that only the finished piece matters is motivated by the idea that art is a *product*. Frankly if that's the only way someone can see art then I feel bad for them. Art is the outcome of a process and the artist's personal journey, anything we create is a snapshot of who we are during that process. I work slowly as the result of disabilities and I don't want nor need to make that process faster. Making art is a wonderful and meaningful endeavour and it continues to be wonderful and meaningful whether or not you are making it for commercial purposes. Not to mention the ecological nightmare that genAI poses; the climate crisis disproportionately affects minority groups including disabled people. To paraphrase a mutual tattoo artist friend, when asked if they were planning to use AI image generation to design tattoos, "should I get a computer to eat my dinner and fuck my wife as well?"
