I do believe commercial art, with the lingering and current trend of consunerism captialism it will mean less tiers of designers.
What I mean is that the junior role will be gone and essentially taking over by ai and there will only be mid and senior levels now.
The entry will be mid level experience with junior level + ai expertise.
High art will not be replaced, because artists are the windows to realities the general public don't have.
The technical artist/designer is about production, that relies in systmes. Just like slavery was made obsolete by the industrial revolution, essentially machines, the junior role will be made obsolete with the ai revolution.
Ai is a tool for a means of production and communication, which is great for the number people (clients, managers etc) not for expression.
The specialist generalist will be the bee creative. They will be designers with 1/2 specialisms and use a.i to do general design jobs.
The overall skill that will be more in demand is copywriting. Prompting ai to get the results that matter will be more in demand than ever.
Creative thinking will always be necessary for any junior, mid or senior role in a micro or macro market/industry. With the rise of a.i it will need better communication - ARTICULATION which will be vital to facilitate visualisation.
I disagree your take on illustrators. An illustrator is traditionally about visual image making, however you missed the mark.
An important factor of being an illustrator, such as I am, is story telling.
Of all the design roles - motion, package, graphic, and even brand design, they arent inheritally story telling roles such as the illustrator, creative director and even the art director.
To illuatrate is to visualise a narrative. And I am a brand, motion and graphic designer by trade, however I'm an illustator by methodology. And all illustrators, should and are noramally trained to use story telling at the heart if their methodology.
I know consider myself a brand and graphic illustrator. Why, because I use logos, guidelines, posters, gifs, title animations to tell a stories for my clients to the right ears.
I'm not phased by a.i. I will use it as a tool but I learned the basics of most design roles, but the one I enjoy and keep learning is story telling.
There is only so much technical expertise you can learn such as grids, typhorgraphy etc. That maybe ai will make obsolote, or more convienant.
Rather than learn the principles of typography, grids, composition, I will learn pick a template and prompt my ai (junior) assiatant to create mid/senior level work.
But storytelling comes in many forms and to hold attention, then convince and convert is a very difficult skill to master. There is a reason why most story tellers are older - experience.
And those young storytellers who have great story telling skill have something ai can never replace - curiosity. Something all illustrators tend to have as part of thier process.
I think you will see new rolea form like I mention abouy myself - brand illustrator, brand creative, brand videographer etc.
Maybe it's my bias and the lack of proper industry experience but as a freelancer I've managed to dip my toe in different sectors and have brieflu experienced different value streams.
Branding is story telling at its heart. And all illustrators are exactly that, story tellers. If you view illustrators just as visual image makers, thats pretty much what graphic designers are. However, an illustrator has story telling at their heart of their work, something i dont think graphic designers really have to worry about or even care about.
Thats my very long two cents about it. I could be wrong 🤔
