I have so much respect for artists. I've never been able to commit myself to a creative activity and come out with something I'm satisfied with. I still use AI image generation to make portraits for my D&D characters. Downloading stable diffusion with a few models was easy, and the results were great once I got the hang of prompting. If I had to commission an artist for all the portraits I've made and used, I'd be hundreds in the hole by now... and I don't have the disposable income for that. In that way, AI image generation has provided me a new, powerful way to express myself that I wasn't able to before. Personally, I don't see any way that AI image gen is going to disappear. All that bad stuff mentioned, I could do on my home computer today without an internet connection. I think, instead of demonizing it as a whole and trying to make future models more difficult to use, it would be more productive to encourage ethical use of the technology. There's always going to be bad actors... but AI image gen is here to stay.
