Can AI be used by others for nefarious purposes, absolutely. But as for AI becoming dangerous or having it's own motivations, absolutely not. He describes himself as a 'materialist'. In other words he believes intelligence and consciousness is simply an emergent property of a complex system. I don't believe that at all, and there is the distinction. That is why I believe (along with those that think like me) that AI will only ever be able to mimic consciousness and sentience, it won't actually possess it.
What's the difference? Well I suppose the difference will be less relevant as time goes on and it becomes better and better at synthesizing true consciousness, but the point is AI systems will always need direction, they cannot 'think' for themselves, they are not and will not ever be 'alive', they are simply algorithms and will always be algorithms.
I suppose it boils down to a philosophical argument. But this guy speaks a bit like Richard Dawkins, he's a very materialist 'scientific' thinker. You just don't get the full picture from people that think that way.
