Hot Take: both extreme sides of this argument are wrong. Charlie is right: Anyone CAN use AI as a tool easily. Copyrighting an image of AI art is kinda ridiculous. AI DOES produce much higher quality works with much less work. However, AI dude is also right: AI is a tool. It can be used with a GREAT deal of creative input to meticulously craft unique desired outcomes (not just random results from single sentence prompts). Using AI as a tool for an actual artist is genuinely incredibly time consuming and involved. I think there is a common misconception and overgeneralization of AI being "you just go type a sentence and press enter." While that is true for most of what we see on social media, the reality is a lot of genuine artists use it as a tool to express EXACTLY what they intend in a more efficient manner (look at Eminem's latest album that is PACKED with AI). I have an AI metal band that's reasonably successful on Spotify. Do I copyright my songs? No, I don't feel I have a right to. However, the music is incredibly difficult to make and cater to the exact result intended, and it's EXTREMELY time consuming and meticulous, and I think this is seriously minimized. I write lyrics, record melodies, sometimes chord progressions (i'm actually a guitarist of 26 years), design a song structure, and use AI as my tool to create the intended song with the limitations I have. For instance: my songs are best fit for metal music, and I prefer to have a female vocalist. I'm not a female and do not play drums or bass at the level required, so AI allows me to check all of those boxes and focus on the song. Creating a song from start to finish typically takes me 1-3 weeks (my last one took me probably 80 or 90 hours, and well over 2000 prompts). I think people need to separate the joke low-effort use of AI and those REALLY using it as a creative tool, don't be so quick to put people in a box.
