I think self-driving cars would make a great last mile solution for transportation networks. The trick is getting people to take self-driving cars before and after they get on the bus, rather than for long trips. Privately owned self-driving cars will probably lead to more congestion. Publicly owned self-driving cars that are integrated into the mass transit system could be revolutionary in a good way. They could help us dramatically reduce the amount of parking we need, which could promote density, reducing the number of car trips needed. You'd need really good AI to minimize trip lengths. Small vans could let you do ride sharing. You could consolidate more parking spaces into a few garages and have a local shuttle help circulate people. When you look at the development of self driving and look back 20 years ago to the first DARPA self driving challenge how far they've come... That said, ticketing them would be a good way to get accountability. A self-driving car that causes an 8 car pile up is one self-driving car messing up and 7 human drivers tailgating/not paying attention. I agree, in general principle, that it's going to get the good policies that would make it actually useful. Edit- To simplify... It won't be self-driving cars that destroy cities, it will be capitalism exploiting self-driving cars.
