high school english teacher here, so, take that for what it’s worth, but… i’ve actually felt the opposite in regards to the public conversation around AI and ChatGPT. everything’s about “how to bring it into your classroom” and exciting new frontiers… only in the last few months have i seen more and more conversation around the impact on learning. i have to go back and listen again but the dismissiveness of liberal arts ppl freaking out bc now AI can write papers for you… that is literally half of my job, to teach kids how to write, how to organize their thoughts, how to wrestle with ideas and express them in coherent words and sentences, how to support an argument with evidence effectively. and there’s also - how to read and understand a challenging text. chatGPT is widely affecting young people’s ability to develop these skills in the first place. it’s so much more than just “writing a paper” that using chatGPT puts on the line for these kids…
