I'd rather have UBI than means of production. I'm not an entrepreneur, I mostly want a laid back life, producing artistic objects, teaching here and there, read books, express myself. UBI allows for people who do not want in this huge game of monopoly that is capitalism to still come to the party and be allowed to chill at the buffet instead of playing for your life. Those who want to play and get more money could, and those who do not want are still allowed to exist without having to engage in alienating jobs, and those fulfilled by their jobs could still enjoy such a life. Is owning the means of profuction really necessary when the wealth produced is redistributed? We don't need economical equality, we just need a universal basic income that ensure existence, then let people, free of the survival instinct, really build the life they want. Negociations between employees and employers would be much more fair, since the employees existence is currently threatened by a lack of job, whereas the employer is only threatened by staff reduction, maybe human ressources overtime or the loss of his whole business, but not his existence. Let's face it, capitalism is pretty much indestructible, UBI is a means to reinforce it. Yes it is running towards failure if automation is not accompanied by UBI. The choice is pretty clear : risk a revolutionary backlash from economical crisis, where people can't afford the goods produced by capitalism, or guarantee yourselves customers with UBI. It is also a very strong stable variable in the market. UBI is not money people sit on, it's the money they spend to survive, thus ensuring a stable flow of money in the market. UBI is a clear choice to preserve capitalism, but I feel it would make this rigged game actually ethical.
