I think over time, these types of things will be seen as societal diseases. I use that term very intentionally: disease. Helping address loneliness is a great ambition, but this actually further perpetuates loneliness. It's a bit like a housing market, and people who self-soothe their loneliness with AI chat bots become unavailable for socialization to others, reducing the supply and further enticing more to resort to AI, further lowering supply, etc. It's a flywheel that I believe, at its worst, can undermine the basis of society, but more likely just create a lot of misery.
It wasn't that long ago we didn't have technology to connect us with people so far away, and we had all of our social needs met by people who we were physically around (neighbors, coworkers, people at the same bar). The internet created hyperconnectivity, and now AI chatbots are going to create hyper isolation and a very shallow treatment for loneliness compared to true companionship and camaraderie
