I don't think it's totally one person's fault over the other's. It was two careless people caught in an unfortunate accident. Everyone jaywalks, don't lie to yourself...you do it, and so do I. You know that you are taking a risk, but you access your surroundings, you look both ways, and you make your move. Assume every driver is distracted looking at their phone...especially in this day and age. The lady who was crossing the street was wearing dark clothes and did not look for oncoming traffic, and was on, what looked to be, a dangerous road to be crossing. The lady driving was looking on her phone, which is incredibly irresponsible. Granted, this was an autonomous car, and we usually inherently trust technology, so this lady let her guard down - which is understandable, but still irresponsible. It's hard to say if a person could have manually maneuvered out of the way - it was really fast. I think it's all dependent on the driver. Some probably could have maneuvered out of the way, some may have slammed on the brakes and still hit her, and others would have also straight-up blasted her. At the end of the day...a person died due to carelessness. Lesson: Stay off your fucking phone while driving. Your life can change just like that. Don't think you are immune to it - 3 seconds looking at your phone while going 40mph is 175ft, basically blind. And I don't want to be hypocritical - I get distracted too, but I try to make an effort to catch myself and stay alert, and this is just more motivation to stay 100% attentive while driving - the lady driving, irregardless if she gets convicted of a crime or not...her life is basically over either way, and this will haunt her. If you're going to jaywalk, be calculated about it, don't take risks. 5 or 10 seconds of patience could save you your life. Be smart.
