Does ai use water?
Short answer: yes. Longer answer: more than people expected, and now everyone’s suddenly pretending to care about water usage.
AI itself isn’t “drinking” anything like a thirsty goblin. The freshwater gets used indirectly in data centers, mostly for cooling those servers that run models.
Here’s what’s going on behind the curtain:
Cooling systems: Big data centers often use water-based cooling towers. Water absorbs heat, then some of it evaporates. That’s freshwater gone.
Electricity production: Generating the power for AI also uses water (especially in thermal power plants).
Manufacturing hardware: Chips and servers require water during production too.
To give you a sense of scale:
Training a large AI model can use hundreds of thousands to millions of liters of water depending on location and efficiency.
Even everyday use (like chatting with me) has a tiny water footprint, but multiplied by millions of users… it adds up.
That said, companies are trying to:
Move data centers to cooler climates (less cooling needed)
Use recycled or non-potable water
Improve cooling tech (air cooling, liquid immersion, etc.)
So yes, AI uses freshwater. Not because it’s dramatic, but because computers turn electricity into heat, and heat has to go somewhere unless we all agree to let servers melt into expensive soup.
If it helps, your existence also uses water, so at least you and the machines have that in common.
