Keeping jobs just for the sake of it is not a viable argument though. I understand that people are upset about being replaced, but in the end it will benefit everyone else.
Especially truck driver jobs are easily replaced with automation. The truck always drives the same route on the same roads, I can't see why that shouldn't be automated.
Removing the cost of drivers should lower prices on consumer goods (if the companies are handing the cost saving down to the consumer that is...).
"They took our jobs" is not enough of an argument to stifle innovation. If it were the case, we would have to remove every construction robot in manufacturing facilities and you'd easily pay twice as much for your new car.
If a job doesn't require a very high level of skill like driving a truck or a train or fastening the same screw in the same place over and over, why not replace the worker with a machine?
It's not like there aren't any other jobs out there, just do something else. Truck drivers are already pretty much treated as slaves and work for almost no money. Go with the time, switch to a different job. Pretty much everyone is hiring at the moment. If I was to quit my current job in IT right now, I know I'd have a new one at the latest by next month.
There is the argument about safety of course and those automated trucks will need a "safety driver" at least for a while but eventually the system will work well enough that it wouldn't need a safety driver anymore.
