Self awareness/consciousness is woo-woo. The nefarious ways humans apply it, a lot less so. We're already seeing this in smaller ways, and it will speedily ramp up of course. So the point isn't really so much about the AI in and of itself as it is about society's control over certain aspects that are ill suited to be managed by private interests.
I think that in a roundabout way, this could be part of the beginning of the end for laissez-faire capitalism, which is already a failed experiment.
