I did dabble a bit in ai image generation a while back, just out of curiousity. And while it did manage to generate some images I liked, they weren't perfect, and I wouldn't go as far as to say they were comparable to actual artists (and I didn't ask it to copy any artist). There were still some issues with the images. Now, that's probably in part due to me not being that adept at prompt writing, but I'd argue it's also a limitation of the software. And also, trying to tell it what to fix is not easy, as it doesn't actually know what it's making or understand what a lot of things are. And unless you fully understand how to manipulate the prompts, it's difficult to figure out what to tell it to fix the problem. Meanwhile, if you're comissioning from an artist, it's easier to communicate what you like and don't like, and what alterations to make. Ai is still not there yet
