It’s funny how neither of these guys put responsibility on our economic, political, military, or cultural systems that drive us to develop A.I. the way we are right now. What is the reason why A.I. needs to try and give users an answer they like and feel good about, and not just the most objective, most factual possible answer? Engagement, the need to keep the user using that specific A.I. this is profit seeking behavior not born out a scientific approach to trying to create the best tool possible. Our political system gives us no way in what ought to be public resources, and A.I. is just the next technology that has 0 democratic safeguards to prevent it from harming the vast majority of people. What drives us to need to develop the most hi-tech military systems? What drives our enemies to have to develop them in order to compete? Our hegemonic world domination and military industrial complex, endlessly seeking new conflicts and vectors of aggression to necessitate new espionage and intelligence systems. And culturally, we are alienated and isolated from one another, with no sense of community. We have lost our shared sense of purpose and instead gain meaning in our lives through top down media pipelines, instead of horizontal interpersonal relationships. This environment makes a trillion dollar magic 8-ball for perfectly in our current media consumption diet. No, A.I. isn’t some alien invader, it is just a volatile new scientific innovation, like nuclear fission, that when trained in our the conditions of the modern western hegemonic empire, has the potential to leap out of the boundaries we imagine for it, and cause suffering on a mass scale.
