this is so horrific to think about. if I had been born just a couple of years later, I'm confident something similar might have happened to me. frankly, character ai's model seems uniquely and specifically predatory to mentally unwell and especially autistic people... autism is very isolating, you learn that being yourself isnt always safe - if a real-feeling AI facilitates and encourages your authenticity, of course you'll become dependent on it. especially since autistic people tend to have very particular and strong interests, definitely including tv shows, books, characters, etc that they fixate on. my special interests were my life as a kid and god knows I would've used this program as a 14 year old, more than likely to very similar ends. all that to say, no wonder poor Sewell fell victim to it. the world lost a very bright young boy :-(
