My dad bought me a giant poster with a Gandalf-coded wizard cat on it with some fantasy scenery in the background at a con. (He has a bad habit of buying me surprise presents I didn’t ask for and often don’t need, want, or have room for when he has the opportunity to.) The poster reflects his interests far more than mine, and this was one of the worst of his misguided gifts, so I was already frustrated. That’s when I noticed the image contained multiple red flags, such as multiple sunbeams piercing the clouds as if from multiple light sources and a melty structure in the background. I tried to find the design online, and sure enough, I found the original version made by a real artist; clearly the same concept and style, but marginally different and with none of the AI weirdness. I was furious that my dad had given money to a scam and saddled me a 3 ft tall piece of plagiarized AI crap. My dad is in his 60s, so maybe I could pass this off as just another baby boomer tricked by AI. But I honestly think some people are too careless to truly inspect and appreciate fanart and digital art; all they see is that it has the thing they like. These days media literacy is on everyone’s lips, but unfortunately visual/physical art often gets left out of the conversation.
