Long post coming, and probably controversial to post on an artists comment section XD But the subject is complex, and to me not as easy as just hating AI art for the sake of lacking a human touch. ---- I think there is a very, VERY fine line when it comes to the discussions about AI art. The worst part is that the discussion 99% of the time just boils down to "AI art has no soul" or "Why do you care, everything is inspired by everything." The issue here is that te first one is out of pure emotion, the second one is a dismissing a lot factors. btw: the copywrite stuff is of course a bad one. Artists are also told everywhere not to copy but be inspired. But the (borderline) copywrite stuff is also just a prompt from someone sharing the results. Which means that saying the art coming from AI is lots of copywrite stuff, is painting a false picture. It's not like the art comunity doesn't have folks that copy everywone and promote how great they are. I think AI has some limitation when it comes to generating images, especially when the prompts for it are lacking. Filling in the gaps is something that will, most likely, be filled with the more obvious inspirations. On the other hand, looking at some AI art, you can be impressed by what it can generate, but there are obvious flaws. And I think there aren't many people that have normal opperation brainmatter, that will denie that fact. But asking the AI to generate a fantasy landscape, it can generate something nice. I can really understand how people can say it is emotionless, there is no humanity to it. Much like you said with the red hills. But those red hills are something YOU connect emotionally to. Sure that is a nice touch, but 90% of your readers won't know. It could just as well have been picked as a backdrop by an AI, mainly for the reasoning you already gave, that the red contrasts nicely with the character. So, though it is a nice emotional and human connection to the art, it doesn't really mean it is technically better than an IA choosing something for its onw image. When I look at a Picasso painting, I wonder what is so nice about it. While Picasso himself would probably smack me on the head if I said that to his face. So does that meam that if an AI creates something abstract that looks, somewhat, like a Picasso, that it would mean it is better or worse than what the artist would himself would make? In the end, the main thing I see it all boiling down to is "intent". What was the intention of the art? What does it mean? why is something like it is? And sure enough an AI generated image will have no intent. At least not in the creative way we think about. The AI just creates an bunch of collored pixels in the order it thinks fit together in the way you discribe it to it. On the toppic of inspiration, something might be generated based on other peoples stuff, but the fact that artists try to find out where the artstyle is from, is again an emotional thing. Sometime an AI comes with a result that looks amazing. And whether you care or not, who the artstyle is based on, is irrelevant. Yes, someone can ask you, or me, or anyone, and get an answer. But don't forget that it is something that is irrelevant to 90% of hte people seeing it. I also produce music in a certain genre. But I have no clue what styles other artists are inspired by, Sometimes I can guess, but I don't really care. Something is something because someone combined something. It becomes it own thing and the origins don't matter. I don't think anyone would look at anime today and start working back where someones artstyle originally came from and what cavemen drew it. ---- I think there is nothing wrong with image generation, I think in a lot of ways it can help with inspiration. It is generally just the way it is used, that is causing the issues. People generating something but not saying it was generated. People showing off with something they never created, or using it as a shortcut into a scene they have no right being in yet. Tansparantie would be key here, and real artists that constantly try to fight AI, maybe put some of that energy into your creations. Not that I mean that in a negative way, because we definitey need to have some force working against a flood of AI art shared with the wrong idea, intention, or even trying to rip people off. But as in nature, every action is countered with an equal and opposit reaction. So the more you fight against AI, and the people that like to use it, the more they will fight back.
