It’s really insane to truly comprehend how much scientists and other researchers can infer just from understanding the patterns in the periodic table. And that some of the elements were literally “discovered” via inference by an immensely observant and intelligent individual who somehow understood that entirely unknown phenomena in the universe followed a pattern that made their existence an automatic conclusion! This reaction reminded me so much of the magnesium drip I was given to prevent seizures during severe preeclampsia. It was awful! I was sound enough of mind to know my hallucinations were not real, and this was all entirely under medical supervision for my own safety and the successful delivery of my wondrous 35 week preemie daughter. But that didn’t stop me from seeing black mold splattered across literally every single surface in the hospital - from the ceiling to my pristine white bedsheets! My high blood pressure actually made me go blind except for my periphery, but I remember so vividly looking at a clock on the wall and watching the numbers get up and walk away like the ants in a Salvatore Dali painting! It was so wild, and I am not one to EVER dare try hallucinogens. The odd thing was that - being a pregnant woman (giving birth due to induction at the time) and caring above all about my baby - I had the most logical, eerie sense of calm about these hallucinations. Just days prior a physician had yelled at me because I physically couldn’t stop trembling violently with fear after finding out my IVF miracle was coming early due to preeclampsia! I couldn’t stop my own physical body from reacting with violent shaking, yet somehow I still had the ability to control my mental faculties enough to understand that reacting to my hallucinations would only cause stress to my body and my baby. So when I look at the periodic table magnesium is waaaay over there on the other side from the negatively charged ions you are talking about. It also prevents seizures like bromide, and it’s obviously a metal as well. I know it is helpful for inhibiting muscle cramping and is used topically to relieve spasms. And it works super well by the way! But how on earth does it not hurt the baby to be flooded with a substance like that, and if it inhibits muscle nerve firing activity, why would it also cause hallucinations when used via IV for seizure prevention?
