*What I think as a non-artist.*
Firstly, you have a very based opinion on ai-art for an artist, and that I find is very uncommon among artists.
(Just read your comment section is basically an anti-ai circle jerk)
*For your comment section:*
AI artists are Artists by definition. You might not like it, but it is true. Art is anything that is perceived by someone as art. An artist therefore is someone who makes something that is perceived as art by someone else. And that is true for AI-Artists, as long as there are people perceiving ai-art as art, ai-artists are true artists. *Even art that was created with unintetional strokes is art!* Art is such a broad term it is almost impossible to exclude something from it.
*Why non-artists don't like AI*
The best and the worst thing about AI is its low barrier to entry. It basically allows everyone one to generate visual art. But that also means to find good pieces or good ai-artists for that matter you basically have to wade through a bog of rubbish.
*What artists have to understand:*
No one has the right to work in the profession they spend years to develop a skill for. No one. There have been people waking others in a time when there were no alarm clocks. There were people lighting streetlamps as a profession. Switchboard operators, a new job that came with the phone and gone with the computer. At the same time, there will Always be a niche for people that still do historic jobs, but it won't be a demand that will have work for many.
*Humans are human*
There is also the fact that typically humans value Things more that have been made with effort by other humans. So no matter how good AI art will be, there will always be People wanting to have art made by humans.
*Stealing art.*
The problem with stealing digital art. Since data and therefore digital art in generally is very easy to copy and steal, AI art is not really changing anything here. I don't say it is ethical or moral, but what can be done will be done unless there is something preventing it from being done. That is not only true for digital art. By making your digital art available online, you basically consent to the high probability of it being stolen without you knowing it. The internet is a global network, and we have no global authority making sure nothing will be stolen. Whether Soliha in Uzbekistan uses your pizza Image for his pizza place or an AI to generate one doesn't really make a difference to you personally.
Many of the Big companies we have today got there by abusing humans. Workforce, Data, Emotions, Everything. Why should they stop at the pictures you drew online? I don't say this is Right, it clearly isn't. I just say this is how it Always has been. Illegal practices are just an item in their Risk Management.
Governments are too slow to regulate this. The technical advancement has long out sped our institutions. Also it is not so easy to define what stolen art is apart from using the exact same image someone created.
*Why generative AI probably hit a plateau for now, as someone who works in tech.*
Now people generally don't like stuff to be stolen from them, so many sites that live from content creation have started to make sure web crawlers from open AI are not sniffing through their sites. And I am sure the ones from meta and google will follow this ban list. How effective this will be and how low it will take for the AI companies to find other means to get their desperately needed data is a question I can't answer, but it will definitely not last forever.
