Don't think Neil did a great job explaining AI vs AGI and what the meaning of developing actual AGI would be. Thatd be like understanding our consciousness on a level that would be unprecedented. It would put humans in a god like caste which I personally dont believe is possible. The best simple anaolgy I've heard for why AI is not that great is that it is a reflection of human thought. Thats it. A mirror doesnt think and can't create things. AI models have been trained on human generated data. At a certain point there is little to no data on things and it can't innovate. It is a useful tool for certain tedious tasks however it is not going to replace you at a job as it would be too volatile and trapped into certain functions. Maybe thered be less people working whos job equates to something someone with no actual skill in anything would do. But like it can write an essay and if you read it it might be the most bland incorrect shit imaginable. You'd have to read it and edit it but at the end of the day it would save more time to have someone who is a writer to create it as it would be fresh, nuanced, and legible. I know it can do this with high levels of success but not without human interaction. All the tech ceos who are invested in AI say it is going to take jobs or theyre replacing people with it because obviously it needs to do well for the money theyve spent but also because theyre saying the quiet part out loud. We dont want to pay for labor costs. I am the CEO and I am the company, I do everything I am the best. It's all horse shit. In certain things like repeating patterns like data entry yeah its the tits. But even though it may seem dynamic it truly can not stand in the same room as the human mind. AGI is a long way away and all these companies are gonna do worst case is use it as an excuse to expedite jobs over seas, pay skilled white collared workers ( developers ) less, and hire less people / make the barrier to entry lower for more skilled jobs. I think the grain of salt is that people will have to adapt to just like they did with the .com bubble and the printing press etc.
