Apart from the unmistakable stench of billionaires rushing to make ever more obscene amounts of wealth (in the form of untaxable stock options, etc) and the crying shame of the state of the rest of humanity there is potentially an even bigger issue roaring away under the hood. AI is now the largest consumer of compute in the world and MS, AWS, etc. are up to the hilt in collaboarative debt with the major players but Open Ai, the biggest player out there, is haemorrhaging billions of dollars and looking for amounts of venture capital that are impossible to obtain, there simply isn't enough cash available in the world to achieve their aims (or cover their arses). Add this to the growing realisation that there have been no major advances in AI performance since Chat GPT 4, that AI is not doing anything really novel for humanity, that without detailed human checking AI output is not trustworthy and that as a consequence the use of AI is starting to tail off and you get a market collapse. So much has been invested on levels that dwarf the imagination that should this all go south, there will be catastrophic economic fallout.
