I’m pro AI but I find the outrage over "stolen" training data warranted. In most cases it’s probably covered under tech companies’ Terms of Service. If they’re distributing our creative work widely it’s not a stretch to think they also feel entitled using it to train models.
That said AI can’t replicate the soul of a writer. But it can be part of a process where a real person is still shaping editing and refining the final work.
I’ve talked about this with folks in writing groups. If you train a local AI model that's ethically sourced, on your own writing, and use it to help draft a novel, are you not still the author? Someone told me that would be like ghostwriting but if the output is indistinguishable from your style and you guide its direction isn’t it more like an extension of your voice? Im specifically talking about an isolated AI that runs completely offline.
I dont use Gen AI to generate my writing. I would never improve my voice or style if a machine was doing the work. The process of being a writer is what I enjoy.
