I believe the school of thought is that if you keep the unemployed populace happily sessile and somewhat fed and entertained, it prevents them becoming desperate gangs of angry unemployed people without homes.
Though if AI gets to the point of mass job replacement then I dare say it will have no trouble helping it's overlords put down any incipient rebellion with the help of some drone buddies.
