I don't entirely agree. The history of putting more and more machines between raw material and finished product has typically increased employment and productivity. It has spread wealth more evenly. The intervening machines and their manufacturing infrastructure and supply hierarchy employs way more people than would otherwise be the case if only labour was employed between raw material and finished product. Another upside is that the machines produce way more finished products and thus more consumers gain. More products become available to more employed people. It is win win.
