I don't think creating art is the purpose of humans in general. Only a rather small minority of people can't live without making art. Most of us are generally plodding along fine being uncreative and don't feel the need to be. It is natural and intuitive for anyone to think that everyone else has the same psychological needs, but it's also just wrong. Additionally, I think the question isn't so much what happens when AI gets good at imitating art but rather what happens when they become indistinguishable from what would result of a real person pouring their life into their work. In a medium where the creation can be cleanly torn away from the creator, such as text, image, video or music records, at the end of the day the creation is just a string of bits. Nothing prevents an automated process from generating something indistinguishable if not identical from human creation, in those mediums. If you cannot tell the difference, and if there is effectively no way to tell the difference, you won't feel this hollow feeling that you get from AI stuff now. At that point, _all_ such works of art will potentially be produced by AI and we're just going to have to live with that. Of course, we're not there yet. But no matter what it is that AI missing, the only barrier to its imitation is just an engineering challenge. There's also the issue that in many contexts, people need images, videos and so on, but they don't actually need art. If you walk around a board game convention today you will see a large majority of prototype board games use AI for their illustrations. It's much faster and cheaper than an artist, and the result is more usable than doing it manually. And almost nobody cares that it's AI-generated because these images have a very down-to-earth purpose, they're not there to be art. In most cases, the game makers still want to pay artists to make the final versions, but it's more out of solidarity than anything else. It's the result that counts. As an artist, you probably use some kind of software editor. Do you care how this software was made, how readable it is, whether it uses elegant algorithms? Do you care whether it was crafted by people meaning to do a good job? No, to you it's just a tool, you care about the final product and about results: features, performance and stability. For many people, art is the same.
