I work at an Amazon, and they automated a job to sort packages to different conveyors. The FC knew this was a difficult and boring job, high mistake and failure rate, and invested millions in the my warehouse to see if this job could improve by getting rid of this one job that three 25/HR workers did, with brand new equipment to read boxes and send to different conveyors.
The failures continued only at higher machined rate, causing several bottlenecks and ad hoc workarounds the brand new equipment, to replicate the old warehouse design, which was many times more efficient and productive.
Automation will not improve things for Amazon, unless it's well integrated and designed to the last detail. The logistics way more important than the logic circuits.
It will be several setbacks and wasted billions to try to even replicate the FCs with full automation. There's just too many adjustments a human can do instinctively, that cannot easily machined, done minute to minute, moment to moment.
